A rare example of a heavy nasal helmet constructed from strong riveted iron plates and featuring a distinctive downturned nose guard and stylized deer head finials. The eyebrow-style brow plate adds a subtle decorative touch to its otherwise utilitarian design.
Used between the 9th and 13th centuries, this helmet would have seen use by Viking warriors and early Crusader-era infantry alike. The nasal helm became widespread during the early medieval period, offering crucial facial protection while retaining visibility and ventilation. Its robust structure and forward-pointing nasal bar were effective against slashing and glancing strikes, making it popular among Norse raiders and the militaries of Frankish and Anglo-Saxon realms. Stand not included.
