This remarkable Anglo-Saxon / Hiberno-Norse Scandinavian Viking sword dates to approximately the 9th-10th century AD and represents one of the most iconic weapon forms of the Viking Age. The sword features a classic Peterson Type K pommel paired with a Type L crossguard, a combination strongly associated with Scandinavian and Anglo-Norse warrior culture during the height of Viking expansion throughout Northern Europe. Measuring approximately 82.9 cm in overall length with a 69.4 cm blade, the sword retains an impressive presence while exhibiting the authentic appearance expected of a weapon that survived over a millennium beneath the earth. Following recovery, the sword was professionally cleaned, stabilized, and conserved using museum-grade wax to preserve its surface while maintaining its archaeological character. Photographs documenting the sword in its original excavated condition accompany the piece, offering a fascinating glimpse into its discovery and conservation journey.

The Viking sword was among the most prized possessions a warrior could own. Unlike spears and axes, which were common battlefield weapons, swords required significant resources, specialized craftsmanship, and high-quality iron. Ownership of a sword often reflected status, wealth, and military accomplishment. During the 9th and 10th centuries, Viking warriors traveled throughout the British Isles, Ireland, France, Eastern Europe, and beyond, carrying swords of this type into some of the most transformative conflicts of the early medieval world. Hiberno-Norse examples are particularly significant as they reflect the cultural blending of Scandinavian settlers and native populations throughout Ireland and the British Isles.

Original Viking swords remain among the most sought-after artifacts in the entire field of medieval arms collecting. Their direct association with the Viking Age, combined with their rarity and historical significance, has made them cornerstones of major museum collections worldwide. This example combines strong typological characteristics, excellent overall dimensions, professional conservation, documented recovery history, and authentic Viking Age construction. It stands as a powerful relic of the warrior culture that shaped medieval Europe and would represent a centerpiece acquisition for any serious collection of early arms and armor.

Provenance: Acquired through a veteran antique and arms and armor dealer in souther Europe. Professionally conserved and stabilized following recovery.
