Helmets of this type were worn throughout the Viking Age and into the early medieval period by Norse, Norman, and Crusader warriors alike. The nasal helmet’s utilitarian design allowed for both visibility and facial protection, making it a favored choice through the Norman invasion of England in 1066 and the early Crusades. Depictions such as those in the Bayeux Tapestry show nearly identical helmets in battlefield use. Its spangenhelm design, a carryover from late Roman and migration-era styles, illustrates the evolution of European combat armor.
This helmet is a significant and visually impressive example of early medieval warfare technology and is a rare and desirable addition for collectors of Viking, Norman, or Crusader-period militaria. Stand not included.
