Beautiful framed woodcut on laid paper depicting "Joachim and the Angel" from The Life of the Virgin, after Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528). Created from Dürer's celebrated woodcut series of the early 16th century, this composition illustrates the biblical moment when an angel appears to Joachim to announce the forthcoming birth of the Virgin Mary. Signed in the plate with Dürer's iconic monogram, the sheet also retains the correct two towers / city gate watermark associated with this impression.

This example is especially desirable, retaining two documented collector's stamps on the verso. The first is the crown over "PAAR" collector's mark (Lugt 2009), identifying ownership by Prince Johann Karl de Paar, Baron of Hartberg and Krottenstein (1772-1819). The second is the "J.P.C." monogram within an oval border (Lugt 1432), identifying the collection of Johann Peter Maria Cerroni (1753-1826). Also present on the reverse is a gallery label from Davidson Galleries, Mercer Island, Washington. Together, these documented collector marks provide exceptional historical provenance and add significant collector interest to this Renaissance print.

Unlike paintings, Renaissance woodcuts such as this were originally printed as pages within books and therefore were not issued with certificates of authenticity. Over the centuries, individual leaves were frequently separated from their original volumes and collected independently. As a result, provenance for these works is most often established through historic collector's stamps, applied by prominent collectors, scholars, noble families, and institutions to document ownership and authenticate the print as it passed through distinguished collections.
