This is an original German WWII War Merit Cross 2nd Class with ribbon (Kriegsverdienstkreuz II. Klasse), instituted in 1939 and awarded for meritorious service contributing to the war effort outside of direct frontline combat. The War Merit Cross recognized significant administrative, logistical, industrial, and civil contributions in support of Germany’s military operations during the Second World War.
This example is a zinc construction, typical of wartime production, and retains the correct form and proportions of the award. Much of the original bronze wash has worn away, leaving an even, subdued surface consistent with age and material characteristics. The suspension ring remains intact, and the cross is accompanied by its original riband-style ribbon. Overall, this is an honest and authentic example of a WWII-era German military award, suitable for collectors seeking representative examples of period decorations.
