This highly sought-after WWII German Model 1938 Double Decal SS combat helmet is an exceptional early-war example manufactured by Eisenhüttenwerk Thale and marked ET62 on the skirt, with production lot number 4339 stamped into the rear interior. The shell retains its original smooth field gray-green finish, showing honest patina, scuffs, and natural service wear consistent with age and use. Both original period-applied decals remain present. The wearer’s right side displays the Party shield, estimated at approximately 70 to 80 percent intact, while the wearer’s left side retains the highly prized SS runes shield, exceptionally well-preserved at approximately 90 percent or better, with strong detail to the twin black Sig runes and metallic backing.
The interior retains its original early-war aluminum liner band and complete multi-perforated brown leather liner. The leather shows dryness, hardening, darkening, and age-related wear from decades of storage, consistent with original components. The helmet retains its liner band and chinstrap bales, though the original leather chinstrap is absent. As an early double decal SS helmet, this example represents one of the most iconic and closely collected forms of German WWII headgear.
Authentic M38 Double Decal SS helmets are among the rarest and most desirable artifacts in the field of German militaria. With its ET62 shell, matching early-war configuration, strong decal retention, and untouched appearance, this helmet stands as a premier acquisition for the advanced collector or serious military history institution.
